What is the PBSA?
Originally founded as the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) in 2003, the Professional Background Screening Association is an organization dedicated to promoting high ethical and performance standards for Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs) around the world. From small businesses to Fortune 100 companies, they ensure members adhere to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) as well as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
How are CRAs accredited?
CRAs must pass a rigorous onsite audit, conducted by an independent auditing firm, of its policies and procedures as they relate to six critical areas (listed below). Three years following, a surveillance audit is performed to ensure observance of industry standards. Each accreditation lasts for five years, after which the provider must complete the process again to remain as such.
Why does accreditation matter?
The benefits are two-fold, serving applicants and employers differently.
Applicants gain peace of mind that their Personally Identifiable Information (PII) will be protected through the background screening process, their report will be as accurate as possible, and employment decisions based on those reports will follow the letter of the law.
Employers can rest assured knowing that an accredited screening provider, like One Source, is committed to excellence, compliance, and consumer protection. They document and follow all manner of policies and procedures meant to uphold and deliver the highest level of industry standards in the following areas:
- Information Security
- Legal & Compliance
- Client Education
- Research & Data Standards
- Verification Services
- Business Practices
